The site is currently a work in progress but some of our areas of interest include Truth in Recruiting (preparing information regarding non-military career alternatives & education campaigns), worker justice (look for an article regarding the successful University of Miami Janitoral Campaign in a previouis SEYM newsletter), and immigrant rights (including addressing issues of violence against day laborers in South Miami-Dade County).
"We all eat. But we rarely stop to think about where our food comes from, how it was made -- and who makes it possible." -- Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation
Most of American's fruits & vegetables are still picked by hand. The farmworkers who pick them are among the nation's poorest, earning less than $7500 a year, & are vulnerable to exploitation & abuse.
The majority of America's farmworkers are immigrants. They often live in rundown trailers, sheds, & garages, where a dozen or so may share a room. Since 1996, six cases of involunterary servitude (modern day slavery) have resulted in convictions in Florida; many otehrs have probably gone undetected.
Current campaigns & issues include pesticide awarenesss (click on Farmworker Health), slavery in the fields, and actions urging Burger King to join Taco Bell & McDonald's in insisting upon grower codes of conduct & a penny more per pound picked for tomatoes.
Please take a moment this week to think about where your feed comes from & how you might be able to support these workers.
